FAQ
What is CBD?
CBD (cannabidiol) is a natural compound in cannabis and hemp plants. It is found in hemp plants. CBD has been found to help dogs with appetite and digestion, chronic pain, inflammation, mood, memory, movement, sleep, stress and anxiety and skin problems. All dogs (and mammels) have CB1 and CB2 receptors in their brains and body, known as the endocannabinoid system. This system plays an active role in regulating and maintaining internal balance.
While CBD cannot directly itself attach to CB1 or CB2 receptors; it impact the Endocannabinoid System and attaches itself to the Cannabinoid Anandamide, known as the bliss molecule, which is naturally made in the brain and helps regulate physiological responses. When these compounds build up in the body, it allows the cannabinoid system to work effectively.
Is CBD legal?
Yes, CBD is legal. Under the Farm Bill of 2018, all hemp products and their constituents are legal in all 50 states if they contain a THC percentage of 0.3% or below.
Is CBD safe?
Yes, CBD is safe. Life threatening complication from CBD are very rare in dogs and cats. Because dogs have more Cannabinoids receptors than humans, THC can be toxic especially in large quantities. CBD helps to build up Cannabinoid Anandamide in the brain.
How Does CBD Work in Dogs?
CBD is a natural chemical that works within the Endocannabinoid System in our brain. Cannabinoids interact with the Endocannabinoid receptors located in the central and peripheral nervous systems in the brain and helps maintain balance in the body to keep it in a normal healthy state. Our products are non-psychoactive as they DO NOT have THC in them, which is the chemical in cannabis that produces the “high” and is harmful for pets to consume.
What is the difference between CBD and THC?
Both CBD and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) are derived from the cannabis (marijuana) plant. Unlike THC, CBD is not psychoactive.
CBD shares the same metabolic pathways with a class of drugs called NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) like ibuprofen and Rimadyl. These metabolic pathways are responsible for controlling many conditions in the body from inflammatory responses to blood clotting.
The most important thing to remember is CBD cannot directly itself attach to CB1 or CB2 receptors. Instead, CBD attaches directly to FAAH enzymes, which break down the Cannabinoid Anandamide – when anandamide is allowed to build up it strengthen your Endocannabinoid system and keeps it active throughout the day. This is the reason CBD has very low and mild side effects that most will not experience and is also why CBD oil does not produce the “high” that marijuana does.
Do we need a prescription from our vet for CBD products?
No, your pet does not need a prescription from your veterinarian. However, we recommend consulting with your veterinarian when introducing CBD products into your pets daily regimen. While all U.S. veterinarians are forbidden by the American Veterinary Medical Association to recommend or prescribe CBD, they are allowed to talk to you about the benefits and risks of CBD.
Can I give CBD products to my dog with medications currently prescribed by my dog’s veterinarian?
We would always recommend consulting with your veterinarian when introducing CBD products into your pet’s daily regimen. While all U.S. veterinarians are forbidden by the American Veterinary Medical Association to recommend or prescribe CBD, they are allowed to talk to you about the benefits and risks of CBD.
How do I know which product to purchase and how much to give my pet?
CBD full-spectrum products contain cannabinoids, nutrients, and terpenes that are found in the “whole” hemp plant and provide additional benefits. The CBD should be all natural or organic to limit the ingestion of unhealthy preservatives. Products should be lab tested with a batch number provided as well as an experation date.
How long will one bottle last for my pet?
It depends on the size and responses of the dog. In general, we recommend starting with 1 mg per 10 pounds and increase from there. One bottle of our tincture has a shelf life of approximately 12 months up to 24 months. Placing it in a cool dry place will increase its shelf life.
